Goodyear Mobilizing Airships to Support Hurricane Relief Fundraising

Goodyear Mobilizing Airships to Support Hurricane Relief Fundraising

AKRON, Ohio, Sept. 2 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company (NYSE:GT) will use its famous fleet of airships to encourage an ongoing stream of donations in support of the Hurricane Katrina relief efforts. The only airships with electronic day- and night-signs, the Goodyear blimps will use their signs to encourage donations and promote fund-raising efforts from the American public.

(Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20050204/GTLOGO)

A variety of airship support options was offered to relief agencies, according to Chuck Sinclair, senior vice president of global communications for Goodyear. "We talked about the possibility of flying signs over the affected areas, however it was agreed that the best way to offer immediate support is through an awareness campaign to alert the public where donations can be made," Sinclair said. "We recognize the relief efforts will go on for months, and we pledge our resources in support of these efforts as a way to keep the American public focused on the needs."

Those efforts have already started in Los Angeles and Columbus, Ohio. The Carson, Calif.-based Spirit of America is providing television coverage for the San Diego State-UCLA football game, and Akron, Ohio-based Spirit of Goodyear is covering the Miami of Ohio-Ohio State game.

"We have extensive travel plans for the airships over the next few months where the California airship will travel coast-to-coast carrying the hurricane relief messages," Sinclair said. "We also are looking at innovative ways to support fund-raising telethons and concerts."

In addition to the aerial efforts, the company is also providing additional support to aid relief efforts as well as a focus on the many Goodyear associates who were directly impacted by the disaster. The company is exploring alternative work opportunities for these people, including jobs in other Goodyear facilities. Also under consideration is establishing emergency service centers in the area and outfitting and operating mobile tire service trucks to fulfill expected on-site demand.

"We still have associates unaccounted for and we are making every effort to locate them and to ensure support of affected associates and families," Sinclair said. The company is establishing an internal repository for donations from other Goodyear associates worldwide who want to assist their fellow workers as well as encouraging donations to the American Red Cross, Salvation Army and FEMA relief efforts.

Despite the obstacles of closed operations and disrupted transportation capabilities, Goodyear also is focusing efforts on providing enough tires for those who will need them in the affected areas, Sinclair said. "Disaster relief is a massive undertaking and this requires an ample supply of tires, many of which are already in short supply. Goodyear is prioritizing the supply of certain types of tires for police cruisers, utility trucks, tractors, loaders and other work vehicles with plans to hold them in reserve in local warehouses for the agencies that desperately need them to support their efforts."

Goodyear is the world's largest tire company. The company manufactures tires, engineered rubber products and chemicals in more than 90 facilities in 28 countries around the world. Goodyear employs more than 75,000 people worldwide.

U-Haul Teams Open to Serve Labor Day Movers

U-Haul Teams Open to Serve Labor Day Movers

PASCAGOULA, Miss., Sept. 2 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- U-Haul Company announced that as of 7 a.m. today all U-Haul Centers in the state of Mississippi will be open to support self-movers over the Labor Day weekend.

U-Haul maintenance teams from across the Southeast converged on Mississippi as soon as the storm passed. Stockpiles of supplies have been accumulated and positioned in Alabama and Mississippi.

"Our maintenance teams have worked 24/7 to restore service to U-Haul customers. This weekend, U-Haul expects to help 183,000 customers move. As these customers travel across the country to their new homes, they need to know that the U-Haul network is up and running to support them," said JT Taylor, U-Haul executive vice president.

U-Haul maintenance teams drew on their experience in recovery from Hurricane Andrew and were poised for action as soon as the eye of the storm passed.

Facilities will be open, although in many cases there is no phone service and electricity is provided by generators. Where buildings are too damaged, teams will operate out of office trailers.

"This is the second busiest moving time of the year," said U-Haul Chairman Joe Shoen. "Whether people are crossing the country or trying to repair and rebuild locally, they need to know U-Haul is up and running to serve them."

Most people move during summer school breaks so this is the last chance for many families to relocate this year. U-Haul has previously announced that it will offer one month free self-storage to storm victims in the affected areas.

Six U-Haul stores in New Orleans remain underwater. U-Haul has set up a temporary disaster headquarters in Hammond, La., and will be in New Orleans as soon as conditions permit. Except for New Orleans, U-Haul is up and running everywhere.

There are reports of spot fuel shortages across the country. If a U-Haul customer needs help finding fuel, they should contact their neighborhood U-Haul location for locations in the area that have fuel.

U-Haul is requesting that customers needing recovery supplies in affected areas purchase only as much as they can use immediately so that all customers can be helped. More supplies will arrive steadily over this busy Labor Day moving weekend.

Editor's note: Executive Vice President JT Taylor will be available for
interviews.

Want to Cut to Your Car's Gas Bill in Half? Honda's Natural Gas Powered Civic GX Lowers Consumers' Fuel Costs by 35% - 50%

Want to Cut to Your Car's Gas Bill in Half? Honda's Natural Gas Powered Civic GX Lowers Consumers' Fuel Costs by 35% - 50%

- Civic GX provides lower cost fuel alternative to gasoline vehicles

- Abundant natural gas produces near zero emissions, reduces foreign energy dependence

- Drivers benefit from HOV lane access and tax benefits

TORRANCE, Calif., Sept. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- While drivers of gasoline- powered cars are cringing every time they fill up, owners of Honda's Civic GX, a natural gas powered vehicle, are paying 35% - 50% less at the pump. With gas hitting $3 a gallon across California, natural gas, currently priced between $1.80 to $2.00 per gas gallon equivalent, is a clean-burning alternative fuel that is available at re-fueling stations throughout the state. Additionally, the availability of a new home refueling appliance, named Phill, now gives GX owners the opportunity to say goodbye forever to gas stations while further increasing their savings.

Honda is the only automaker currently retailing an all natural gas-powered passenger car in the U.S. market. Though Honda has marketed the Civic GX to fleet operators with their own fueling stations, the company believes there is a growing public demand for lower-cost, ultra-clean and convenient alternatives to gasoline-powered transportation. Honda has begun offering GX to its customers at select dealers.

California, home to 50% of all natural gas vehicles (NGVs) nationwide, has a substantial natural gas refueling infrastructure, with over 135 public fueling stations in its major metropolitan areas. This infrastructure continues to expand with new stations being planned and built. NGV owners can check on line to find stations, for instance, on a support site offering an interactive map of the state.

Although the MSRP for GX is higher than a similar gasoline-powered Civic, the Federal government currently offers a $2,000 tax deduction on the purchase of a new alternative fuel vehicle, and more incentives are planned. Another key incentive is that Honda's GX qualifies for California's High-Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lane access for solo commuters. Local incentives and rebates may also be available to some consumers.

Recent concerns about America's energy independence have focused attention on the abundant supplies of domestically produced natural gas. Most Californians already have natural gas supplied to their residences. GX owners have the option of using their home natural gas supply line to fuel their cars overnight using Phill, a pay-phone sized that can be mounted on a garage wall or outdoors. Phill can be leased or purchased, and is installed by technicians from FuelMaker, the appliance's manufacturer. It offers simple "start" and "stop" buttons and will automatically turn itself off when the tank is full. Civic GX buyers can lease Phill through Honda dealers for approximately $34 to $79 per month (plus installation) depending on regional incentive programs.

The Civic GX sedan seats four passengers and has a driving range of between 200 and 220 miles. It shares the same platform with the Civic LX sedan and offers a similar array of safety and convenience features. The Civic Sedan has earned a 5-star frontal impact crash rating from the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has labeled the U.S.-made Honda Civic GX as "the cleanest internal combustion engine-powered vehicle ever tested." The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) recently named the Civic GX as the "Greenest Vehicle of the Year" in overall environmental performance, ahead of even hybrid vehicles.

Natural gas powered vehicles are part of Honda's strategy to offer the best available technology for the reduction of air pollution, greenhouse gas emissions and petroleum dependence.

Natural gas, an abundant North American resource, is among the best alternatives for displacing petroleum on a near-term basis. Longer-term, the Civic GX and Phill can help to bridge the gap between gasoline and even cleaner, more efficient energy alternatives such as hydrogen-powered fuel cells.

Honda's extensive history of environmental leadership includes recognition as the "Greenest Automaker" by the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) in its 2005 ranking of corporate environmental performance with the lowest average emission levels and highest average fuel economy.

The Spinx Company Commits to Operate at a Zero Profit Margin on All Gasoline Sales and Merchandise Sales in Response to Hurricane Disaster

The Spinx Company Commits to Operate at a Zero Profit Margin on All Gasoline Sales and Merchandise Sales in Response to Hurricane Disaster

GREENVILLE, S.C., Sept. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- The Spinx Company, Inc. commits to operate at a Zero Profit Margin on all gasoline sales and merchandise sales from Monday, August 29, 2005 through Monday, September 12, 2005. The Spinx Company is taking this action to help absorb the dramatic increase in wholesale gasoline prices in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

The temporary shutdown of the refineries and pipelines that provide the region with its gasoline, heating oil, and truck diesel fuels were rendered inoperable due to the storm. Damage to this vital infrastructure has left much of the North and Southeast regions without the supply needed to meet the surge of demand, resulting in astronomical prices that some believe to be driven by greed or opportunistic strategy. The Spinx Company is taking a stand against such actions and vows not to profit from gasoline sales during the week of the hurricane disaster.

Company President, Stewart Spinks states, "We at The Spinx Company, Inc. are doing all we can to ensure our stores have the gasoline our customers need to conduct their daily lives in a community-centric and responsible manner even when profits must be foregone."

In order to validate the zero margin pledge for the week of this disaster, The Spinx Company will open financial records to independent auditors, Pope Smith Brown & King for a complete review. In the event that any net profits are found, The Spinx Company, will donate that amount to the local chapter of The American Red Cross designated for the hurricane disaster relief fund.

Stewart Spinks continues, "We want to thank our loyal customers for their on-going support and patronage in this difficult hour and wish to reassure them that we are committed to serving the people of SC for over 30 years."

Spinx Gasoline Supply:

Unlike many industries that periodically replenish inventories at a fixed cost, a motor fuel retailer must perpetually replenish inventories with products that have a constantly changing cost. On a typical business day, The Spinx Company, Inc. replenishes approximately seventy percent of its stores with at least one tanker of gasoline. One tanker truck holds enough fuel to fill approximately 300 cars' gas tanks and under normal circumstances. This delivery is enough to supply the store for the next 12 to 24 hour period depending upon local demand.

Many customers reacted to the news that fuel would be in short supply for the near future by creating a run at area gas stations, depleting any available reserves. Within hours, Spinx was forced to close many gas pumps due to a lack of product. Spinx has continued to re-supply stations during the last few days with product at significantly higher cost that has been passed on to the customer.

Stewart Spinks summarizes, "We hope to be back to normal supply by mid- September, but until then, all of us need to conserve gasoline usage and resist the urge to hoard an already limited supply."

Daramic Announces Global Energy Surcharge

CHARLOTTE, N.C., Sept. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- In order to address increases in the cost of processing oil, natural gas and energy, Daramic will implement a global energy surcharge of 6% effective October 1, 2005 or as soon as contractually allowable in certain cases.

"While Daramic is dedicated to controlling costs through continuous improvements in efficiency and productivity, unprecedented increases in these costs have been too large for Daramic to absorb. Accordingly, we must implement this surcharge to support our continued commitment to new product development and providing best-in-class quality, supply and product performance."

Visteon Promotes Digital Radio Mondiale for Automotive Applications

Visteon Promotes Digital Radio Mondiale for Automotive Applications

KERPEN, Germany, Sept. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Through a collaborative project with the RTL Group, Europe's leading broadcasting and production company, Visteon Corporation (NYSE:VC) will demonstrate an in-vehicle Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM) receiver at the IFA World of Consumer Electronics Show in Berlin, Sept. 2-7. The Visteon DRM, FM & AM CD-Tuner will be on display at the DRM Automotive Digital Radio booth (hall 5.2a - stand 102).

(Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20001201/DEF008LOGO )

With support of the RTL Group, Visteon has contributed its audio and infotainment expertise to develop a modified radio receiver for DRM signal reception. The RTL Group is one of the key members of the Digital Radio Mondiale consortium.

The introduction of Digital Radio Mondiale will enable broadcasters to continue moving radio technology from analog to digital format, increasing sound and content quality. As a key benefit of DRM, consumers will be able to receive broadcasts in their homes and cars. DRM is designed to deliver a noise- and hiss-free sound quality, substantially improved over conventional analog radio. Most importantly for drivers, as already demonstrated in test drives, DRM can generally deliver excellent reception results in vehicles, even at high speeds.

"Digital Radio Mondiale is already aired in more than 30 countries with broadcast members from all six continents," said Gerhard Zeiler, RTL Group's chief executive officer. "Many broadcasters have committed to the DRM format including RTL Group stations."

Linda Rivers Bell, Visteon's electronics product strategy and planning director, points out that Visteon's infotainment and sound management capabilities are well established in the automotive industry, "We are prepared to deliver automotive grade DRM solutions, whenever the market is ready."

Visteon designs, tests and engineers sound systems for the automotive environment that accurately reproduce sound across all broadcast standards. Visteon is already supplying HD Radio/In-Band On-Channel (IBOC) modules and Satellite Radio Systems in North America, as well as Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) modules in Europe.

"As a strong supporter of new technologies, we consider DRM a complementary technology to the existing digital radio standards," says Bell.

The first DRM receivers will be available immediately following the IFA consumer show as tabletop radios able to receive DRM, DAB, FM and AM bands. Portable radios are expected to follow in 2006 and the market is expecting the first automotive solutions to follow thereafter.

About Digital Radio Mondiale

The DRM consortium formed in March 1998, when a small group of pioneering broadcasters and manufacturers joined forces to create a universal, digital system for the broadcasting bands below 30 MHz. DRM is the world's only, non- proprietary digital radio system for short-wave, AM/medium-wave and long-wave. DRM currently covers the broadcasting bands below 30 MHz, the DRM consortium voted in March 2005 to begin the process of extending the system to broadcasting bands up to 120 MHz. The design, development and testing phases are expected to be completed in the 2007-2009 time frame. The quality of DRM audio is considered excellent, and the improvement upon analog AM is immediately noticeable. Unlike digital systems that require a new frequency allocation, DRM uses existing AM broadcast frequency bands. DRM applications will include fixed and portable radios, car receivers, software receivers and PDAs. Broadcasters supporting DRM include Deutsche Welle and Sudwestrundfunk (SWR) in Germany, RTL Group stations, BBC World Service, Radio France and Voice of America, to name only a few. See http://www.drm.org/ for more information.

Volvo and Art Center College of Design Present First-Ever Car Designed by Women

Volvo and Art Center College of Design Present First-Ever Car Designed by Women

SEPT. 19 MEDIA ALERT/PHOTO OPPORTUNITY

Volvo's 'Your Concept Car' at Art Center's South Campus Monday, September 19

WHAT: Volvo and Art Center College of Design will unveil to the West
Coast "Your Concept Car" (YCC): the first car in the more than
100 years of auto manufacturing designed and developed almost
exclusively by women.

Designed with the needs of everyone in mind, the sleek, sporty
car features dozens of design elements and innovations not
typically found in cars designed by men, including no gas cap,
no hood, headrests for ponytails, gull wing doors, improved
storage solutions and new sight lines for drivers.

The historic car has been touring the world and will make its
one-time West Coast appearance at Art Center College of Design
in Pasadena.

WHEN: Public viewing of car: Monday, Sept. 19, 8 a.m. -- 10 p.m.
Presentations to students: Monday, Sept. 19, 10 a.m. and
1:30 p.m. (session times are tentative)
Media invited to attend any time Monday

WHERE: Art Center College of Design
South Campus
950 South Raymond Ave.
Pasadena, CA 91105

WHO: Presented by a team of women engineers, designers, marketers
and managers at Volvo who initiated, designed and developed the
car -- including Anna Rosen, Exterior Designer and alumna of
Art Center. Members of Art Center from a variety of design
disciplines also will be on-hand to discuss the car.

WHY: Women purchase about half of all new cars and influence the
vast majority of all car sales; yet, for a century, men have
made most of the decisions in the design, development and
production of a car, until now.

FEATURES: The YCC features innovative storage solutions throughout --
accommodating carry-ons similar to an airplane (i.e., laptop
bags, briefcases, handbags, etc.), low maintenance features
precipitating a no open hood, no gas cap refueling and theater-
style rear seats allowing greater storage capacity.

Among other of its many premium features: easy-clean paint;
numerous exchangeable seat covers of various colors and
materials (linen, leather, felt, etc.); gull-wing doors that
make it easier to load and unload larger items; computerized
assistance for parallel parking; and improved sight lines via
Volvo's own Ergovision concept -- whereby at the point of
purchase, retailers conduct a body scan of the driver measuring
height and length of arms and legs. The data is stored in the
vehicle's key, and the car recommends a seat position for the
driver that provides her or him an optimal line of vision and
reach. The car also electronically notifies the owner's chosen
service center when maintenance is due, and the service
technician contacts the owner to book the appointment. And the
YCC comes with an environmentally sensitive, yet powerful 215
bhp, PZEV engine.

Nitrogen Filled Tires Can Save Gas This Holiday Weekend! Dunn Tire Employs Nitrogen for Improved Tire Performance and Gas Mileage

Nitrogen Filled Tires Can Save Gas This Holiday Weekend! Dunn Tire Employs Nitrogen for Improved Tire Performance and Gas Mileage

BUFFALO, N.Y., Sept. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Save Gas this holiday weekend with nitrogen filled tires. Dunn Tire LLC utilizes a nitrogen inflation system similar to that used by NASA in space shuttle tires to fill all the tires they sell.

Dunn Tire has invested a quarter of a million dollars making them one of the first dealerships in North America to offer its customers nitrogen. Nitrogen has long been a popular alternative where consistent pressure is critical, such as commercial airlines and high-performance race cars.

Tires filled with nitrogen remain properly inflated longer, resulting in longer tread life, lower rolling resistance and better gas mileage.

"With today's gas prices continuing to climb toward $3.00 per gallon we believe that our decision to provide our customers with nitrogen was exactly the right thing to do," said Randy Clark, Dunn Tire Chairman of the Board.

The main characteristic of Nitrogen is that it flows out of a tire slower than air, helping to maintain correct tire pressure longer, which leads to improved fuel efficiency.

It has also been reported that nitrogen has solved vibration problems on high-performance vehicles. Other benefits include reduced wheel corrosion, and better performance on both wet and dry pavement.

Major tire manufacturers support the use of Nitrogen citing the harmless inert diatomic gas as a breakthrough in tire care and maintenance.

Studies have shown that eight of ten tires on the road are under inflated. As an established leader in the Western, Central NY and Erie Pennsylvania community for over 30 years, Dunn Tire is proud to offer these innovative solutions to all their customers.

"Our customers are really impressed with the improvement in gas mileage and overall tire performance. They're telling their friends, who tell they're friends and it just keeps going," Clark said.

Clark continued, "Nitrogen is just one more way that Dunn Tire is wowing customers."

Some vehicle owners in other areas who have long commutes have reported saving as much as two miles a gallon with Nitrogen.

Tire pressure has become such an important issue that the government passed the Tread Act, part of which states that all US manufactured vehicles under 10,000 pounds GVW, must be equipped with a tire pressure monitoring device to warn if the tires are not properly inflated.

About Dunn Tire

Dunn Tire (http://www.dunntire.com/) is based in Buffalo, New York, and has 26 stores located in Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, New York's Southern Tier and Erie, Pennsylvania.

Dunn Tire represents numerous major tire brands and is the nation's 26th largest tire retailer. The company is known for their low price guarantee.

PETRONAS Signs LOI to Commercialise Its Automotive Engine in China

PETRONAS Signs LOI to Commercialise Its Automotive Engine in China

BEIJING, Sept. 2 /Xinhua-PRNewswire/ -- PETRONAS, Malaysia's multinational petroleum corporation, today signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) with China's Nanjing Automobile Corporation (NAC) and Brilliant Culture Group Limited (BCG) towards the use of its PETRONAS E01 engine technology for the car maker's vehicle line-up.

Under the LOI, PETRONAS and NAC will assess the engine technology's suitability and develop engine specifications to suit the NAC's recommended platforms. BCG is expected to co-invest with NAC in the manufacturing facilities for the engine.

NAC, a state-owned corporation of China, is one of the most important automotive industrial enterprises in the country with more than 30 subsidiaries and 400 affiliated companies. It is headquartered in Nanjing City in Jiangsu Province. BCG, on the other hand, is a consulting firm whose expertise includes strategic planning, marketing and government relations. It has offices in Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong.

The signing of the LOI took place at the China World Hotel here in the presence of Malaysia's visiting Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Abdul Razak. Signing on behalf of their respective companies are PETRONAS' President/Chief Executive Officer Tan Sri Dato Sri Mohd Hassan Marican, NAC's Vice President Mr Lu Zhenxin, and BCG's Managing Director Ms Maggie Ip.

With the signing of the LOI, the three parties will further explore works on the PETRONAS E01 technology to produce 1.8-litre to 2.2-litre engine family. The compact design of the PETRONAS E01 Engine allows it to be fitted into various vehicle platforms with customised intake and exhaust manifold to match vehicle requirement.

The PETRONAS E01 Engine was a result of PETRONAS' involvement in the Formula One when it became, in 1995, the main sponsor of the SAUBER PETRONAS Team. The collaboration provided it with the opportunity to engage in the value-added automotive engineering technology R & D. One of the immediate fruits of this collaboration was the successful development of the PETRONAS E01 Engine in 1998 by a group of PETRONAS engineers. In 1999, the PETRONAS E01 Engine was fitted into the official cars of the first PETRONAS Malaysian Formula One Grand Prix.

PETRONAS is a Fortune Global 500 company with business operations in more than 30 countries. It first entered China in 1991 in the oil and gas exploration sector. Since then, the company has expanded into the downstream sector of the country's oil and gas industry. It has a liquefied petroleum gas joint venture in Jiangsu Province and in 2004 entered China's lubricant market through a Shenzhen-based marketing company, PETRONAS Marketing (China) Co. Ltd in Shenzhen.

For the year ended 31 March 2005, PETRONAS recorded a gross revenue of US$36.1 billion and a pre-tax profit of US$9.4 billion.
